Full: D. THE OLD MAN THEY THOUGHT WOULD BE EASY

PART 1 — THE CHALLENGE

The neighborhood asphalt court was packed with teenagers.

Music played from a portable speaker as a crowd gathered around the cracked concrete court, many holding up their phones to record the streetball game.

At center court, a young athletic streetballer confidently bounced a basketball between his hands.

He wore a black sleeveless jersey, black basketball shorts, and white sneakers.

Across from him stood an elderly silver-haired man.

The older man wore a faded blue basketball jersey, loose gray shorts, and retro white sneakers.

He stood quietly.

No trash talk.

No smile.

The young baller looked him up and down.

Then casually bounced the basketball toward him.

The ball rolled once across the asphalt before the elderly man caught it.

The young player grinned.

He pointed toward the older man's chest.

"I'll go easy on you."

The crowd chuckled.

The young baller continued.

"First to five, no rush."

More laughter came from the teenagers surrounding the court.

The elderly man didn't react.

He simply looked directly at his opponent.

His expression was calm.

Focused.

Almost intimidating.

He slowly bounced the basketball once.

THUMP.

He caught it.

Then bounced it again.

THUMP.

He adjusted his grip.

The crowd leaned closer.

The young streetballer folded his arms briefly, still smiling.

The old man lowered his center of gravity.

His knees bent.

His stance widened.

He placed the basketball in his right hand.

Then—

the ball suddenly started moving.

PART 2 — THE SMILE DISAPPEARED

The elderly man began pounding the basketball against the cracked asphalt.

THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.

Fast.

Low.

Controlled.

His right hand moved effortlessly.

Then he switched to his left.

THUMP. THUMP.

The crowd immediately became quieter.

The young streetballer's smile disappeared.

He lowered his stance.

His eyes followed the basketball.

The elderly man crossed the ball from left to right.

Then back again.

The movement was incredibly quick.

A few teenagers raised their phones higher.

Someone in the crowd shouted:

"Yo!"

The old man remained completely focused.

He shifted the ball behind his back.

Then brought it between his legs.

The young player took one step backward.

His expression had completely changed.

He was no longer laughing.

He was watching carefully.

The old man continued dribbling.

Low.

Fast.

Precise.

The ball never rose above his knees.

The crowd began murmuring.

The young baller lowered into a defensive stance.

He spread his arms.

He was ready now.

The elderly man looked directly into his eyes.

A brief pause.

The basketball stopped in his right hand.

Then—

he exploded into motion.

PART 3 — THE MAN THEY NEVER EXPECTED

The elderly man suddenly drove to his left.

The young defender reacted immediately.

The old man crossed the ball behind his back.

The defender shifted the wrong direction.

The crowd erupted.

The elderly man accelerated past him.

The young baller spun around and chased after him.

But the old man was already at the basket.

He took one smooth step.

Then another.

He rose toward the hoop.

SWISH.

The basketball dropped cleanly through the net.

The crowd exploded.

Teenagers screamed and raised their phones.

The elderly man landed calmly.

He turned toward his opponent.

The young streetballer stood frozen beneath the basket.

His earlier confidence was completely gone.

The crowd started chanting.

"Again! Again! Again!"

The old man simply walked back toward the top of the key.

He picked up the basketball.

The young baller looked at him differently now.

No smirk.

No jokes.

No laughter.

Only respect.

The old man bounced the ball once.

THUMP.

He looked directly at his opponent.

The young player lowered into his defensive stance.

The crowd went silent again.

The old man began dribbling.

Low.

Fast.

Controlled.

The camera pushes in on his focused eyes.

Then cuts to the young defender's tense expression.

The basketball continues pounding against the asphalt.

THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.

The old man suddenly shifts his weight forward.

The defender reacts.

The crowd gasps.

And the next move is about to begin.

May you like

CUT TO BLACK.

THE END.
