FULL: ONE GAME

The late afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the cracked asphalt of the neighborhood street court, baking the concrete in suffocating summer heat. Heat waves shimmered visibly above the pavement. The air was thick with the smell of warm tar, the rhythmic, heavy thud of a worn basketball, and the aggressive, adrenaline-fueled trash talk of a dozen young streetballers.

The fast-paced, high-stakes pickup game ground to a sudden, screeching halt. A collective pause swept through the young men as a lone figure stepped past the rusted chain-link fence and onto the painted boundary lines.

It was an elderly man. He moved with a slow, deliberate shuffle that seemed entirely out of place amidst the chaotic energy of the court. He wore a loose, sweat-stained white tank top with a faded black zero printed boldly on the chest, paired with oversized, baggy black basketball shorts. His scuffed white sneakers squeaked faintly against the hot pavement as he walked straight into the center of the court. Within seconds, he was completely surrounded by a tight circle of teenagers and young men—all in their prime, their muscles glistening with sweat in their high-performance athletic gear.

A stray pass sent the basketball rolling across the rough asphalt. It stopped dead at the old man's feet. Slowly, he reached down and picked it up. His calloused fingers gripped the familiar, rough texture of the worn leather. He lifted his head, his pale, weathered eyes scanning the circle of bewildered faces staring back at him.

"Mind if I play next?" he asked, his voice steady, cutting through the heavy silence of the court.

For a split second, nobody moved. Then, the alpha of the court—a tall, heavily muscled guy in a grey tank top and black shorts—stepped forward. A condescending, mocking smirk slowly played on his lips as he looked the frail old man up and down, clearly amused by the sheer audacity of the request. The rest of the crew behind him began to snicker, exchanging disbelieving glances and nudging each other at the absolute absurdity of the situation.

"You? Come on man, this is not your league," the young player scoffed, waving a hand dismissively as if shooing away a nuisance.
