The Last Call from Mom

Tyler ignored his mother’s call three times that night.

He was twenty-seven, angry, tired, and done with her constant worrying.

When his phone rang again, he looked at the screen.

Mom.

He pressed decline.

“Not tonight,” he muttered.

At 2:17 a.m., a police officer knocked on his apartment door.

There had been a crash.

His mother’s car had gone off a bridge during a storm.

She was gone.

Tyler felt the world fall away beneath him.

At the funeral, people told him she loved him.

He nodded, but inside, he was drowning.

All he could think about was the last call he never answered.

A week later, Tyler went to clean out her small apartment.

On the kitchen table was her phone.

The screen was cracked.

The battery was almost dead.

He picked it up and saw one unsent voice message.

His name was on it.

His hands trembled as he pressed play.

His mother’s voice filled the room.

“Tyler, sweetheart, I know you’re mad at me. I know I call too much. But I had a dream tonight that you were in danger, and I couldn’t sleep.”

There was a pause.

Then thunder.

“I’m driving over just to check on you. You don’t have to open the door. I just need to know you’re okay.”

Tyler covered his mouth.

Then another voice came through.

A man’s voice.

“Ma’am, stay in your car.”

Tyler froze.

The message continued.

His mother whispered, “There’s a man outside your building. He’s trying the doors.”

Tyler’s knees went weak.

That same night, police had arrested a man near his apartment.

A man carrying a knife.

His mother had not been calling to bother him.

She had been trying to save him.

Tyler sank to the floor and cried like a child.

From that day on, he never silenced a call from someone he loved.
