The Stranger at the School Gate
Every afternoon, a man in a baseball cap stood across from Lincoln Elementary School.
He never spoke to anyone.
He never crossed the street.
He just watched the children leave.
Parents became nervous.
Teachers whispered.
Finally, one mother called the police.
When officers approached him, the man raised his hands.
His name was David.
He said he was just waiting.
“For who?” the officer asked.
David looked toward the school gate.
“My daughter.”
The officer frowned.
“What’s her name?”
David looked down.
“I don’t know anymore.”
The officers thought he was confused.
Then David pulled out an old photo.
A baby girl wrapped in a yellow blanket.
“My wife left when our daughter was six months old,” he said. “I was overseas with the Army. When I came home, they were gone.”
He had searched for eighteen years.
A private investigator had finally found a record.
His daughter might be working at this school.
Not studying there.
Working there.
At that moment, a young teacher walked out carrying a stack of papers.
David saw her face.
He stopped breathing.
She had his eyes.
The officer called her over.
“Ma’am, do you know this man?”
The teacher looked at David.
“No.”
David slowly held out the photo.
Her face changed.
“That blanket,” she whispered.
“My adoptive mother kept it.”
David’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m not here to take anything from you,” he said. “I just wanted to know if you were okay.”
The young teacher stared at him.
For eighteen years, she had believed her father had abandoned her.
But the man standing across the street had been searching for her the whole time.
She stepped forward slowly.
Then she hugged him.
The police officer looked away.
And the next afternoon, David was there again.
But this time, he was not across the street.
May you like
He was inside the school gate…
waiting to walk his daughter home.
