The Wallet on the Subway

In New York City, nobody noticed the old man fall.

People stepped around him.

Some looked annoyed.

Some kept walking.

Only one person stopped.

A young man named Jordan.

He was late for a job interview, wearing his only good suit, holding a folder with his résumé inside.

But he dropped everything and helped the old man sit up.

“Sir, are you okay?”

The old man could barely speak.

Jordan called 911.

He stayed until the ambulance came.

By then, his interview was over.

He watched the train leave and knew he had lost his chance.

On the platform, he noticed a brown wallet.

It belonged to the old man.

Inside was a driver’s license, a few dollars, and a business card.

Jordan could have mailed it.

Instead, he went to the hospital.

When he arrived, the old man was awake.

“You missed something,” Jordan said, handing him the wallet.

The old man stared at him.

“You came all the way here?”

Jordan shrugged.

“It was yours.”

The old man looked at Jordan’s folder.

“Job interview?”

Jordan smiled sadly.

“Was.”

The old man was quiet.

Then he said, “What kind of work?”

“Anything honest.”

The old man nodded.

Three days later, Jordan got a call.

A woman’s voice said, “Mr. Jordan Hayes? My father would like to meet you.”

Jordan went to a glass office tower downtown.

At the top floor, he saw the old man again.

But this time, he was in a suit.

His name was Richard Bell.

Founder of one of the largest construction companies in the city.

Richard looked at him and said, “I’ve spent forty years hiring people with perfect résumés. But you showed me character before I even knew your name.”

Jordan got the job.

Years later, when people asked how his life changed, Jordan always said:

“I missed a train. I lost an interview. I helped a stranger.”

Then he smiled.

“And somehow, that was the best career move I ever made.”
