"I'm going to paint."
The auditorium erupted.
Some people gasped.

A man near the front shook his head as if the whole thing had to be a joke.
Even one of the judges couldn't hide a skeptical smile.
"Wait," he said.
"You're telling us you're going to paint?"
"Yes," Sofia replied.
The judge glanced at the other judges before looking back at her.
"Is this some kind of prank?"
"You... can't even see the canvas."
Another judge forced an uncomfortable smile.
"We admire your courage," she said gently, "but we don't want you to embarrass yourself. Did you prepare a song instead?"
Sofia stood quietly.
She heard the laughter.
She heard phones being raised as people prepared to record what they expected would become an embarrassing failure.
Her expression remained calm.
But tears slowly gathered in her eyes.
