PART 2 — THE CANES DISAPPEARED

The first notes of the ballet music drifted across the auditorium.

Ruth and Edith didn't move immediately.

They remained perfectly still beneath the spotlight.

Their canes rested lightly beside them.

The audience waited.

Then Ruth moved first.

She lifted one foot.

Her pointe shoe touched the floor with astonishing precision.

Edith mirrored her.

The two women began moving together.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Every motion was synchronized.

Their arms rose in perfect arcs.

Their shoulders remained relaxed.

Their heads turned at exactly the same moment.

The audience grew completely silent.

The center judge leaned forward.

Her expression had changed.

The mockery was gone.

Ruth took another step.

Then another.

Edith matched every movement.

Their wooden canes moved with them for several seconds, almost appearing to be part of the choreography.

Then the women reached the center of the stage.

They stopped.

Looked at one another.

And simultaneously released their canes.

The two wooden canes remained standing against the stage floor for one brief moment before settling safely beside them.

The audience gasped.

The women didn't even look down.

They had already moved on.

Ruth extended one arm.

Edith extended hers.

They separated by several feet.

Then turned toward each other.

Their bodies moved with the precision of dancers decades younger.

One step became two.

Two became a graceful sequence of controlled turns.

Their pointe shoes glided across the stage.

Their arms moved together like mirrors.

The audience remained frozen.

The center judge stared.

One of the other judges slowly rose from his chair.

Ruth and Edith accelerated.

They crossed the stage in opposite directions.

At the exact center, they turned.

Their timing was flawless.

Then came the first leap.

Ruth pushed from the floor.

Edith launched at precisely the same instant.

For a moment, both women were airborne.

The audience erupted.

But the women had barely begun.

They landed cleanly.

Neither stumbled.

Neither reached for the canes.

Instead, they continued directly into another sequence.

Ruth spun.

Edith spun with her.

Their skirts moved through the air.

Their arms opened.

Then closed.

Their bodies remained perfectly balanced over their pointe shoes.

The camera moved closer.

Every wrinkle on their faces was visible.

Every movement was controlled.

The contrast was almost unbelievable.

These were women whose ages had made the audience laugh only moments earlier.

Now the entire auditorium was watching them with absolute concentration.

Ruth moved into a long extension.

One leg rose behind her.

She held it.

Edith matched the position beside her.

Two elderly ballerinas stood balanced on pointe, perfectly synchronized beneath the golden stage lights.

The audience began applauding.

Then Ruth and Edith transitioned again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More demanding.

They moved through a series of turns, crossing paths without touching.

Their timing remained exact.

The judges watched in disbelief.

The center female judge slowly lowered her hands from the microphone.

Her mouth was slightly open.

She couldn't look away.

The two women reached opposite sides of the stage.

For one second, they stood apart.

Then both turned toward the center.

They began moving toward one another.

The music swelled.

Their pace increased.

They crossed.

Turned.

Separated.

Then returned to the center together.

Their final movement of the sequence ended with both women standing perfectly still.

Their arms extended.

Their heads lifted.

Their pointe shoes planted precisely beneath them.

The entire auditorium exploded into applause.

But Ruth and Edith didn't smile.

They simply looked at each other.

Because the performance wasn't over.

The music continued.

And the two elderly ballerinas prepared for the most difficult section yet.
