Full: D. THEY LAUGHED AT THE 70-YEAR-OLD WOMAN… UNTIL THE RACE BEGAN

PART 2 — THE GRANDMOTHER IN BIB 842 LEFT THEM SPEECHLESS

The starting signal exploded across the trail.

The pack surged forward, shoes pounding against the muddy red earth as dozens of runners charged toward the first bend.

Runner number 217 launched himself off the line, pushing hard through the opening stretch. His friends followed close behind, shouting and laughing as they fought for position.

For the first few seconds, the grandmother in bib 842 appeared to disappear among the moving bodies.

Then something changed.

She accelerated.

Her first strides were short and controlled, but within moments, her pace became startlingly fast. Her thin legs drove powerfully against the ground, and her upper body remained remarkably steady as she navigated the uneven trail.

She passed one runner.

Then another.

A young athlete glanced sideways as the elderly woman slipped past him on the inside of a muddy turn. His expression changed from concentration to disbelief.

Behind them, spectators began shouting.

"Look at number 842!"

Several phones swung toward the trail, desperately trying to keep the grandmother in frame.

She wasn't running like someone trying to survive a difficult course.

She was running with purpose.

As the trail narrowed between trees, the runners were forced into a tighter formation. Some slowed to avoid the muddy patches, while others struggled to maintain their footing on the uneven ground.

The grandmother adjusted effortlessly.

She shortened her stride over the rough sections, lengthened it on firmer ground, and leaned into each turn with precise control.

Her tortoiseshell glasses stayed firmly in place. Her white bun remained neat despite the movement. Her slightly hunched back made her look fragile, but her legs continued carrying her forward at an astonishing pace.

Within minutes, she had moved past several younger competitors.

Then she caught sight of runner number 217.

He was pushing hard up a gradual incline, his breathing growing heavier as he tried to maintain his position near the front.

A shadow appeared beside him.

He glanced to his right.

The grandmother was there.

For a split second, he stared at her as if his mind couldn't accept what his eyes were showing him.

She passed him without a word.

Her expression never changed.

Number 217 tried to accelerate, but the muddy slope forced him to shorten his stride. The grandmother continued upward, choosing her footing with calm precision before reaching the crest ahead of him.

His smug expression vanished.

At the edge of the trail, spectators erupted in astonished shouts.

The same people who had laughed at the starting line were now calling out her number.

"Eight-forty-two! Keep going!"

The grandmother didn't turn around.

She focused on the path ahead.

As the runners approached a more technical section, the course dipped through a muddy bend scattered with exposed roots. Several competitors slowed, carefully picking their way through the slippery ground.

The grandmother adjusted her balance and flowed through the turn.

No wasted movement.

No panic.

No hesitation.

A race official watching from the side of the course lowered his clipboard, stunned by her technique.

Then the camera phones caught up with her again.

The crowd could barely believe the contrast between the woman they had seen walking toward the starting line and the competitor now moving through the trail with such confidence.

But the biggest shock was still ahead.

Near the next checkpoint, an older spectator stood beside the course, watching the runners pass. When the grandmother came into view, he suddenly straightened.

He looked at her bib.

Then at her face.

His mouth fell open.

"No way," he whispered.

He hurriedly pulled an old photograph from his jacket pocket—a faded image of a younger woman crossing a marathon finish line with her arms raised.

The face in the photograph was younger, but the eyes were unmistakable.

He looked back at the grandmother disappearing around the bend.

Then he shouted toward the other spectators.

"Do you know who that is?"

Nobody answered.

The old man held up the photograph with trembling fingers.

"That's her. That's the marathon legend!"

The words spread through the small crowd like wildfire.

Runner number 217, still fighting his way through the course, heard the commotion from behind him.

For the first time that morning, he stopped thinking about beating the other runners.

He was trying to understand how the woman he had mocked could possibly be running like this.

Ahead, the grandmother reached the next stretch of trail.

She had not finished the race.

She had not even reached the final miles.

But the laughter had disappeared.

And every person who had witnessed the beginning of the race now had the same question:

How much had they underestimated her?
