Full: D. THEY SAID THEY WERE TOO OLD FOR BALLET

PART 1 — THE TWO BALLERINAS THEY UNDERESTIMATED

The grand American theater erupted in applause as brilliant stage lights illuminated the center of the stage.

Thousands of spectators filled the auditorium, waiting for the next performance.

Then the curtains opened.

Two elderly, silver-haired ballerinas slowly walked onto the stage together.

Ruth Callan wore an elegant pristine white ballet tutu.

Edith Lawson wore a graceful deep navy-blue tutu.

Each woman carried exactly one wooden walking cane.

They moved carefully but in perfect rhythm, walking side by side toward center stage.

The audience watched with curiosity.

The host stepped forward with a microphone, smiling warmly at the two women.

She turned toward the crowd.

"Please welcome our next contestants... Ruth Callan and Edith Lawson!"

The audience applauded.

At the judges' panel, however, the mood was different.

A female judge leaned toward her microphone.

She looked at the two elderly women with obvious skepticism.

Then she glanced at the male judges beside her.

She shook her head.

"They're too old for this."

A few nervous laughs came from the audience.

The judge leaned closer to the microphone.

"Is this a dance troupe for seniors?"

The comment drew scattered chuckles.

Ruth and Edith didn't react.

They stood quietly at center stage.

Ruth looked toward Edith.

Edith gave the slightest nod.

Then, in perfect unison, both women slowly bent down.

Their wooden canes touched the polished stage floor.

They released them simultaneously.

The two canes remained on the floor beside them.

Both women slowly straightened.

Their shoulders lifted.

Their backs became perfectly aligned.

Their feet turned outward.

Their arms rose gracefully.

Within seconds, their posture had completely transformed.

The fragile elderly women the audience had just seen were suddenly standing in a flawless classical ballet position.

The judge's smile disappeared.

The theater became silent.

The opening notes of the music began to swell.

Ruth and Edith looked straight ahead.

Perfectly still.

Perfectly synchronized.

Ready to dance.

And then the music began.
