PART 3 — THE LANDING
PART 3 — THE LANDING
The elderly gymnast rotated through the air.
Her body remained tight and controlled.
Her legs extended beneath her.
The blue mat rushed toward her.
Then—
THUD.
Her feet landed.
She absorbed the impact with a slight bend of her knees.
Then immediately stood upright.
Completely still.
No stumble.
No extra step.
Perfect control.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then the arena exploded.
Thousands of spectators rose to their feet.
The applause thundered through the stadium.
The two young gymnasts stood frozen.
One slowly covered her mouth.
The other began applauding.
The elderly gymnast looked toward the crowd.
She smiled softly.
She didn't celebrate.
She didn't point at the young athletes.
She didn't need to.
Her performance had already answered every question.
The announcer's voice echoed through the arena.
"That was extraordinary!"
The crowd became even louder.
The elderly gymnast walked away from the uneven bars.
She passed the same two young gymnasts who had laughed at her.
This time, they stepped aside respectfully.
One of them nodded toward her.
The elderly woman returned the gesture.
She continued walking.
The camera slowly pulls backward.
The blue competition floor stretches beneath the bright arena lights.
Thousands of spectators remain standing.
The two young gymnasts watch the elderly woman disappear toward the edge of the floor.
Moments earlier, they had seen her age.
Now they had seen her ability.
And they would never look at her the same way again.
Age tells you how long someone has lived.
It doesn't tell you how much they've mastered.
