The entire arena watched as the 96-year-old grandmother tightened her grip on the uneven bars.
For a split second, nothing happened.
Then she lifted her feet off the mat.
A wave of gasps swept through the crowd as her body began to swing beneath the bar. Her movements were careful at first, controlled and deliberate, but with every rotation, the impossible began to look a little less impossible.
The two young Team USA gymnasts stood frozen near the sidelines.
One leaned forward, unable to take her eyes off the elderly competitor. The other slowly lowered her hand from her mouth, realizing that the woman they had doubted was moving with a level of focus they hadn't expected.
The grandmother swung again.
Her legs rose. Her body extended. The white chalk left faint trails in the arena lights as she moved through the routine, fighting gravity with every ounce of strength she had.
The crowd, which had entered the moment expecting a disaster, began to understand that they were witnessing something extraordinary.
