It was just after lunch at Westbrook Academy, one of Chicago's most prestigious private high schools.
The school was known for wealthy families, championship athletes, and students whose last names opened doors.
Ethan Carter didn't fit in.
He was quiet.
He wore simple hoodies, carried an old backpack, and never talked about his family.
Most students assumed his family wasn't wealthy.
Brandon Cole noticed that immediately.
Brandon was one of the school's most popular students. His family owned several luxury car dealerships around Chicago, and everyone knew it.
For weeks, Brandon had been making Ethan his favorite target.
He would knock books from Ethan's hands.
Hide his backpack.
Make jokes about his clothes.
And whenever Ethan complained, Brandon would simply laugh.
"You gonna tell your daddy?"
Ethan never answered.
That only made Brandon push harder.
Then, one afternoon, Brandon and two of his friends followed Ethan into a bathroom near the gym.
The door closed behind them.
Ethan stopped.
Brandon stepped in front of the exit.
His friends stood behind him.
Ethan looked around.
There was nowhere to go.
Brandon smiled.
"What, you gonna call your mom? (Cười lớn)"

But Ethan pulled out his phone.
His hands were shaking.
His voice wasn't.
"No. I'm calling my father. Where are you?"
The laughter stopped for half a second.
Then Brandon laughed again.
"You actually think your dad is coming?"
Ethan didn't respond.
He had already made the call.
His father had given him one rule years ago:
If you ever feel truly unsafe, call me.
Don't argue.
Don't fight.
Just call.
Brandon suddenly knocked the phone from Ethan's hand.
It hit the floor.
The screen cracked.
Brandon looked down at it and smiled.
"Now what?"
Ethan slowly picked up the phone.
He looked at Brandon.
Then said nothing.
