PART 2 — THE QUESTION THAT CHANGED THE MOOD

The next few moments felt different.
The young athlete expected the old man to laugh it off.
Maybe walk away.
Maybe explain that he had only been watching.
Instead, the ninety-year-old man slowly began walking toward the course.
One step at a time.
His worn sneakers made quiet sounds against the rubber flooring.
The young athletes watched him approach.
At first, they were still smiling.
Then they began to realize something.
He wasn't confused.
He wasn't lost.
He knew exactly where he was going.
The male spectator standing behind the safety barrier leaned forward.
He looked at the old man's thin frame and shook his head.
Then he laughed.
“He can barely keep up!”
The remark drew another round of laughter from several people nearby.
But the elderly man continued walking.
His shoulders remained slightly stooped.
His movements remained slow.
Nothing about him suddenly changed.
There was no dramatic transformation.
No hidden muscular body.
No youthful appearance.
He still looked ninety years old.
And that was precisely what made the moment so strange.
He wasn't pretending to be someone else.
He was simply refusing to let other people's expectations decide what he could do.
The young athlete watched him approach.
For the first time, the confident smile on his face began to fade.
The old man stopped several feet from the angled concrete wall.
He looked at it.
Then he looked at the young athlete.
There was no anger in his face.
Only quiet determination.
The young athlete waited for an explanation.
None came.
The elderly man finally spoke.
“Why not?”
The words were quiet.
Almost too quiet for the surrounding noise.
But everyone heard them.
The laughter stopped.
The young athlete stared at him.
The spectators behind the barrier became still.
Even the three background athletes who had been laughing moments earlier stopped smiling.
The old man turned back toward the wall.
He studied its angle.
The same wall the young athlete had just used.
The same wall everyone had assumed belonged to people decades younger than him.

For a moment, the old man's eyes seemed distant.
As though the concrete wall in front of him had brought back a memory from another time.
He remembered being young.
He remembered training before sunrise.
He remembered the feeling of stepping onto a course while everyone around him believed they knew his limits.
But life had changed.
Decades passed.
Jobs.
Family.
Responsibilities.
Time had taken him farther and farther away from the world he once knew.
Yet somewhere beneath the years, that old part of him had never completely disappeared.
He hadn't come to Las Vegas to prove that he was young.
He hadn't come to make the crowd admire him.
He had come because there was something he had never finished.
Something he had once promised himself he would return to.
And now, standing in front of that wall at ninety years old, he finally had the chance.
The young athlete looked at him differently now.
Not with admiration.
Not yet.
But with uncertainty.
The old man slowly walked toward the designated starting area.

The spectators leaned closer.
Nobody laughed anymore.
