PART 3: The Final Honor Nobody Saw Coming

The tournament director received a message through his headset.

A smile slowly appeared across his face.

He walked toward center court.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"By unanimous vote..."

"Elizabeth Carter..."

"...will be inducted into the United States Basketball Hall of Fame..."

"...during tonight's championship ceremony."

The arena exploded.

Fans chanted her name.

Camera flashes filled the court.

The same woman who had walked into the building carrying an old gym bag was now being celebrated by the entire arena.

Yet Elizabeth didn't stay in the spotlight.

She quietly picked up her bag.

Then she began walking toward the tunnel.

Just before disappearing...

A little girl in the front row called out.

"Ma'am!"

Elizabeth stopped.

She turned around.

The little girl was holding a brand-new basketball.

"I want to be a player like you someday."

Elizabeth walked over.

She gently placed her old leather basketball into the little girl's hands.

Then she smiled.

"Don't become me."

"Become someone the next generation will look up to."

The little girl nodded through tears.

Elizabeth slowly turned toward the tunnel.

She disappeared from the court as the crowd continued applauding.

Then the giant arena screen displayed one final message:

"Never judge an athlete by her age."

THE END.
