PART 1 — THEY THOUGHT SHE HAD NO CHANCE

The USA National Taekwondo Championship in Colorado Springs was already buzzing.

Elite competitors crowded the warm-up area.

Coaches watched from ringside.

Families filled the stands.

Under the bright arena lights, championship medals waited for the athletes who had earned them.

Then the announcer introduced the next competitor.

"Our next athlete..."

"Please welcome... 84-year-old Margaret Wilson."

The noise inside the arena suddenly faded.

A moment later, an elderly woman appeared through the competitors' entrance.

She wore a crisp white taekwondo uniform and a faded black belt.

Her silver hair was neatly pulled into a bun.

Over one shoulder hung an old duffel bag that looked like it had been around longer than some of the young athletes.

People stared.

Then the laughter started.

"She can't be serious."

"Did someone's grandmother sign up by accident?"

"She's in the wrong tournament."

Several competitors laughed as Margaret walked past them.

Others leaned toward one another, whispering and smirking.

"She won't survive the first round."

One competitor laughed.

"My warm-up is tougher than this."

Phones came out across the audience.

People expected a funny clip.

Then the giant video board displayed Margaret's opponent.

A six-foot-three heavyweight champion.

Nearly three times her size.

The arena erupted again.

"That's not a match..."

"That's a disaster waiting to happen."

The heavyweight looked down at Margaret with complete confidence.

"You don't have to do this."

"I don't want to hurt you."

Margaret simply looked up at him with a peaceful smile.

"You'll only hurt me if you can catch me."

The crowd burst into laughter once again.

The referee called both fighters toward the center.

They bowed.

The laughter slowly disappeared.

For the first time, Margaret and the heavyweight stood face-to-face.
