THE BEASTS WITHIN
Part 1: The Psychological Trap
The mafia boss had long noticed the 29-year-old girl from the neighboring district, the daughter of an ordinary blacksmith who had spent his whole life at the forge, barely making ends meet. But the girl seemed as if she didn’t belong to that bleak, freezing environment. Confident, with a straight back and a clear gaze, she never lowered her eyes before people, not even before those whom the entire city feared.
Her beauty was talked about on every corner, but even more people spoke about her character. They said that for no amount of money in the world would she become someone’s toy, especially not his.
At first, the 55-year-old boss acted as he usually did. He sent expensive gifts, jewelry, rare fabrics, offered money that could have changed the life of her entire family. The blacksmith remained silent, and the girl returned everything every time. Messy blonde hair framing her face, she didn’t shout, didn’t make scenes; she simply said calmly that she was not for sale. That angered him more than any insult.
Then he decided to break her in another way. Through fear.
One evening, his men grabbed the girl right on the street. No one intervened. People simply turned away, pretending that nothing was happening. She was taken out of the city, deep into an abandoned Alaskan outpost surrounded by packed snowbanks and weathered ice. Flat winter daylight illuminated a bleak concrete yard where a massive rusty iron bar fence stood.
Behind that fence, they kept three massive purebred Alaskan Malamute-German Shepherd mixes surrounded by terrifying rumors. These animals were specially trained for aggression. They were barely fed, given only raw meat, and they knew only one command — to attack and not stop.
The boss, intimidating with his thick white stubble beard, dense fur collar coat, and dark square sunglasses, sat completely relaxed on a heavy wooden armchair behind the fence. A line of rugged American men in heavy winter parkas stood rigidly shoulder-to-shoulder behind him, watching with absolute, chilling indifference.
He looked at her, trembling violently with terror in her dirt-stained rebel red puff jacket, her frozen breath mist condensing rapidly in the freezing air.
— Either you become mine, or I throw you in there, — he said calmly, nodding toward the enclosure with a slow, intensely mocking smile of total supremacy.
The girl was pale, her hands shaking, her chest heaving rapidly in panic, but her voice did not break.
— I’d rather die than live with you.
That was enough.
The mafia boss made a barely noticeable gesture with his hand, and she was pushed inside. The heavy door slammed shut behind her with a dull sound.
Part 2: The Airborne Lunge
At first, the dogs stayed at a distance of eight feet. The three huge, aggressive mixed-breed animals slowly moved forward across the snow, their heads lowered. Their bodies were tense, muscles rippling under thick coats, saliva dripping from snarling jaws. The girl took a step back but hit a cold, frozen concrete wall. There was nowhere to run.
One of the dogs growled, curled its lips back to bare sharp teeth, and suddenly burst into a sudden, explosive sprint.
The crowd held its breath. The line of men behind the iron fence stood perfectly motionless.
In a sudden, high-velocity movement, the center dog powerfully launched its entire massive body high into the air, flying forward with jaws wide open and sharp fangs exposed, targeting directly toward her. White snow dust kicked up as it lunged at the peak of its predatory attack.
But at the last moment, the airborne lunge ended not in blood, but in complete shock.
The massive dog landed heavily right at her feet, stopping instantly. The ferocious growl turned into something else, something incomprehensible. It slowly came closer and… lowered its head.
The second dog approached as well, walked around the girl, sniffed her red puff jacket, and unexpectedly began to whine softly. The third simply sat down on the packed snow, not taking its eyes off her.
The girl stood motionless, hyperventilating in the freezing air, not understanding what was happening. She didn’t scream, didn’t try to run. Her hands slowly dropped, and one of the large Alaskan mixes gently touched her hand with its muzzle, its warm breath mixing with her own.
A strange silence fell over the snowy enclosure.
After a few seconds, the dogs no longer looked like beasts ready to tear apart their prey. They surrounded her, but not to attack. One lay down on the ice at her feet, another stood beside her as if protecting her, and the third looked at the fence with an expression as if the danger was out there.
The men behind the fence began to whisper. Some took a step back into the snowbanks.
The boss frowned, his arrogant smirk instantly evaporating. This was not part of his plan.
— Forward! — he shouted sharply, giving the command through the rusty iron bars.
But the dogs didn’t move at all. The center dog slowly turned its massive head toward him, curled its lips, and growled fiercely.
Not at the girl. At him.
The crowd froze under the harsh winter light.
And at that moment, it became clear that the real beasts in this story were not the ones locked in the cage.
