PART 4 : The Morning After

My mother woke up to the smell of coffee and the sound of rain against the windows.

For a moment she looked disoriented, then relief washed over her face when she saw me.

“I thought I dreamed it,” she whispered.

I sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand.

“You didn’t. You’re safe now.”

She looked around the guest room — the soft blankets, the fresh towels, the cup of tea Daniel had left on the nightstand.

“Your husband is a good man,” she said quietly.

I smiled, though my chest still ached.

“He is.”

We sat in silence for a while. Then she asked the question I had been dreading.

“What happens now?”
I squeezed her hand.

“Now we make sure Kyle and Vanessa can never hurt you again.”
By 9 a.m. the next morning, Daniel’s legal team had already moved.

Every bank account connected to Kyle and Vanessa was frozen.
The deed transfer on my mother’s house was flagged for fraud investigation.
An emergency petition for conservatorship was filed, naming Daniel and me as temporary co-conservators.

Kyle called me six times before noon.

I didn’t answer.

Vanessa sent a long, angry text:

Rachel, this is ridiculous. Mom is confused. She signed everything willingly. You’re making a huge mistake involving lawyers.

I showed the message to Daniel.
He read it once, then deleted it.

“Let them talk,” he said. “Every word they send is evidence now.”
Kyle showed up at our house that afternoon.

He looked furious — and scared.

Daniel opened the door before Kyle could knock twice.

“You need to leave,” Daniel said calmly.

Kyle tried to push past him. “I need to talk to my sister. And to Mom.”

“You lost that right the moment you sold her house and left her on the street,” Daniel replied.

Kyle’s face twisted.

“You don’t know the whole story. Mom was losing it. She couldn’t handle the house anymore. We were helping her.”

“By putting her in a motel and pocketing four hundred and fifty thousand dollars?” Daniel asked. “That’s not helping. That’s theft.”

Kyle’s eyes flicked to me.

“Rachel, come on. You know how Mom gets. She’s always been dramatic. She probably spent the money herself and is making this up.”

I stepped forward.

“I saw her, Kyle. Under an overpass. In the rain. With nothing but a plastic bag and newspapers. Don’t you dare call her dramatic.”

Kyle’s mouth opened and closed.

Then Daniel spoke again, voice like ice.
“Leave. Now. Before I have you removed.”

Kyle looked between us one last time, then turned and walked away without another word.
