PART 2: “Because I already lost one child,”

The wind lifted the bride’s veil, but she didn’t feel it.

She was staring at the phone like it had just ripped her whole life apart.

The groom looked at the woman, his hands shaking.

“What is this?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“The truth your father paid to bury.”

The guests behind them began whispering.

The bride stepped back so fast she nearly lost her balance.

“No,” she whispered. “No, this can’t be real.”

The woman reached into her torn coat and pulled out one more thing.

An old hospital bracelet.

The bride’s mother’s name was on it.

And the date matched the bride’s birth.

The groom stopped breathing for a second.

“My father told me my mother died when I was born.”

The woman nodded through her tears.

“She didn’t. I was your mother’s nurse. He took you from her. And years later, he did the same thing to another woman. He built two perfect lives on one lie.”

The bride looked at the groom.

This time, she wasn’t horrified by him.

She was horrified by what had almost happened.

“We’re…”

The woman finished the sentence for them.

“You’re brother and sister.”

A cry broke out from somewhere in the crowd.

The bride dropped her bouquet onto the stone steps.

The groom’s phone slipped from his hand.

For a long second, they just stood there in their wedding clothes.

Not like lovers anymore.

Like two children who had just lost the same father.

Then the bride turned to the woman, her lips trembling.

“Why today?”

May you like

The woman broke down completely.

“Because I already lost one child,” she whispered. “I couldn’t let him marry his own sister without knowing who he really was.”
