Mrs. Dalton deeply regrets the classroom incident involving Amara. She acknowledges an inappropriate emotional response during a difficult disciplinary interaction. She categorically denies intentionally harming a child to conceal financial misconduct.
Nicole read it.
“Inappropriate emotional response?”
Melissa laughed bitterly.
“That sounds like she raised her voice.”
Amara’s attorney? We can say family counsel. The lawyer highlighted the more important sentence.
“She denies financial motive.”
Nicole looked up.
“Can they prove it?”
“Not yet.”
Rebecca gave a recorded interview.
“Why did you cut Amara’s hair?”
“She was defiant.”
“What did she do?”
“She accessed confidential material.”
“Did she remove it?”
“No.”
“Copy it?”
“No.”
“Destroy it?”
“No.”
“What did she do?”
“Read it.”
“She was seven.”
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“She had been repeatedly challenging me.”
“About her hair?”
“About everything.”
“Did she ask why the roster said fifty-two sessions?”
“Yes.”
“Was that a reasonable question?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
“Was the number true?”
Rebecca’s attorney intervened.
Later, financial investigators asked about BridgePoint.
Rebecca admitted her sister owned it.
Admitted receiving payments.
Denied theft.
“I performed consulting.”
“Was the relationship disclosed?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I believed the district knew.”
“Did Horizon know?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It wasn’t their business.”
“It became their business when their money paid the invoices.”
Rebecca looked away.
Then the investigator showed the roster note.
AMARA — KEEP — Horizon employee family / Black / strong donor story
“Your handwriting?”
“Yes.”
“Why write Black?”
“Grant demographics.”
“Why strong donor story?”
“Her mother worked for Horizon.”
“Did Amara attend fifty-two sessions?”
Rebecca stared.
“No.”
“Why keep her?”
“Program support happened informally.”
“Fifty-two times?”
No answer.
Then the question that connected everything.
“Did you fear Amara would tell Nicole?”
Rebecca’s expression changed.
Her attorney whispered.
Rebecca finally said:
“Yes.”
“Did that fear contribute to your anger?”
A long pause.
“Yes.”
Not:
I cut her hair to hide fraud.
But close enough to establish motive layered with bias and control.
