Chapter 24 - Her Hair Becomes Hair AgainAmara’s hair grew.

First unevenly.
Then enough to shape.
She refused a major haircut for months.
Nicole never pushed.
At the salon, stylist Renee asked:
“Can I touch?”
“Yes.”
“Trim?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Another visit:
“One little.”
SNIP.
Amara flinched.
Renee stopped.
“More?”
“No.”
“Done.”
A month later:
Three snips.
Then:
“Stop.”
Renee stopped.
Amara checked the mirror.
“One more.”
Choice returned in inches.
By age twelve, Amara wore braids again.
Then short curls.
Then temporary purple tips.
Nicole stopped asking whether each style was “about what happened.”
That question would give Mrs. Dalton ownership forever.
Hair became fashion.
Mood.
Preference.
Normal.
One afternoon Amara asked:
“I want it shorter.”
Nicole looked up.
“How short?”
“Shoulder.”
“Salon?”
“Yes.”
“With me?”
Amara rolled her eyes.
“Obviously.”
Nicole smiled.
The appointment was set.
No therapist requirement.
No anniversary.
No court date.
Amara had seen a photo she liked.
That was all.
The simplicity mattered.

The scissors no longer needed to symbolize anything.
And that was exactly why Chapter 25 could finally use them again.
