The indoor aquatic arena buzzed with anticipation as spectators packed the stands from end to end. Bright lights reflected off the perfectly still water while the loudspeaker echoed throughout the venue.
"Finalists, please report to the paddock."
As athletes made their way toward the competition area, one woman immediately caught everyone's attention.
Lydia walked calmly along the pool deck with a faded blue sports bag slung over her shoulder. She wore a gray windbreaker over a USA racing swimsuit, moving with the quiet confidence of someone who had been there before.
Just as she reached the athlete entrance, a female security officer stepped forward and politely raised her hand.
"Excuse me, ma'am. Athlete access only."
Several people nearby glanced over, assuming the older woman had wandered into the wrong area.
