Without the slightest hesitation, Lydia opened her sports bag.
She calmly pulled out her official athlete credential and held it up for the security officer to see.
Then she said,
"Lydia. I'm in lane two. Ready to race."
The security officer stared at the credential.
Then she looked back at Lydia.
Everything about the moment changed.
Stepping aside, she silently cleared the way.
Across the pool deck, a group of younger swimmers watched in complete disbelief.
Some of them exchanged stunned looks before one voice quietly broke the silence.
"That's impossible!"
The whispers spread through the staging area.
No one had expected the older woman to be one of the finalists.
