PART 2 — THE MAN WHO ANSWERED THE CALL

Less than fifteen minutes later, the sound of approaching engines interrupted the plaza's ordinary afternoon noise.
A black SUV pulled up beside the curb.
Then another.
The young men stopped laughing as several sharply dressed men stepped out. Their movements were disciplined, and their attention immediately turned toward the elderly man sitting alone on the bench.
A tall man in a dark suit hurried toward him.

"Dad!"
He knelt beside the bench and examined the broken camera pieces.
"What happened?"
The elderly man looked at his son.
"These boys destroyed your mother's camera."
The son's face tightened.
He had heard stories about that camera his entire life. His mother had used it to capture the family's happiest moments, and his father had kept it carefully preserved long after her death.
He stood up and turned toward the young men.
"Which one of you did this?"
The troublemaker tried to laugh, but the sound came out weakly.
"Relax, man. It was an accident. Your dad's making a big deal out of nothing."
The son stared at him.
"An accident can happen to anyone. But laughing at someone after you've hurt them? That's a choice."
The young man's friends began shifting uncomfortably.
One of them glanced at the SUVs and the men standing nearby.
"Wait. Who are you?"
The son took a slow breath.
"My name is Daniel Carter."
He paused, looking directly at the man who had mocked his father.
"And this is my father, Robert Carter."
A few people in the crowd began whispering. An older shop owner who had watched the incident suddenly recognized the name.
Robert Carter had spent decades building a successful American engineering company. He was known locally for funding community programs, supporting veterans, and restoring historic buildings.
But his son was not simply a wealthy businessman.
Daniel was the company's current president, a man who had earned a reputation for being firm, measured, and unwilling to tolerate bullying.
The troublemaker's grin disappeared.
Still, he tried to save face.
"So what? Your dad called you because somebody broke a camera?"
Daniel glanced at the broken pieces on the bench.
"No. My father called me because he wanted me to witness something."
He turned back toward Robert.
"Dad, what do you want to do?"
Robert slowly rose to his feet.
For a moment, he studied the young man who had humiliated him. He could have demanded money. He could have called the police and let the situation escalate.
Instead, he asked one question.
"Young man, if that camera had belonged to your mother, would you still be laughing?"
The plaza fell quiet.
May you like
The young man opened his mouth, but no words came out.
For the first time that afternoon, he looked down at the ground.
