Full: VH-THEY MOCKED THE 82-YEAR-OLD GRANDMA... THEN HER FIRST DIVE SILENCED THE ENTIRE STADIUM

THEY MOCKED THE 82-YEAR-OLD GRANDMA AT AMERICA'S BIGGEST SWIM MEET... UNTIL SHE TOUCHED THE WATER

PART 1 — THEY THOUGHT SHE HAD COME TO WATCH

The USA National Swimming Championships had brought America's best swimmers to one of the biggest aquatic arenas in the country.

Thousands of spectators filled the stands.

College champions warmed up in the lanes.

Elite swimmers practiced explosive starts.

Coaches shouted instructions from the pool deck while television cameras followed every serious contender.

Then...

An 82-year-old grandmother slowly walked into the athletes' area.

Her silver hair was tucked neatly beneath a white swim cap.

She wore a navy-blue team jacket and carried an old canvas swim bag over one shoulder.

She looked nothing like the young athletes surrounding her.

She looked like someone's grandmother who had come to watch her grandchildren compete.

The young swimmers noticed her immediately.

One athlete looked at her and laughed.

"Is she actually competing?"

Another swimmer smirked.

"Maybe she thinks this is a senior swimming class."

A third looked at her old swim bag.

"There's no way she's getting in that pool."

Laughter spread through the athletes' area.

Several spectators turned around.

Phones came out.

People began recording.

The 82-year-old grandmother heard every comment.

But she never responded.

She simply walked toward the registration desk.

A race official checked her credentials before looking up in surprise.

"You're registered for the championship?"

The grandmother smiled calmly.

"Yes."

The official pointed toward the competition area.

She thanked him and continued walking.

The laughter followed her all the way to the pool deck.

Then the announcer called the swimmers for the next event.

The grandmother stopped beside Lane 6.

The jokes suddenly became louder.

Nobody believed the 82-year-old woman was actually going to race.

But she placed her old swim bag beside the starting block...

And began preparing.
