PART 3 — THE 82-YEAR-OLD LEFT THEM SPEECHLESS
The scoreboard showed the final results.
The 82-year-old grandmother had finished first in her division.
The crowd erupted into a standing ovation.
The same young swimmers who had laughed at her stood frozen beside the pool.
One of them slowly removed her goggles.
"I can't believe it."
Another looked at the grandmother in disbelief.
"How did you do that?"
The grandmother climbed out of the pool.
She picked up her old swim bag and calmly wrapped a towel around her shoulders.
The young swimmer who had mocked her the loudest finally walked over.
"I'm sorry."
"I shouldn't have laughed at you."
The grandmother smiled.
"You didn't know me."
The young swimmer lowered her head.
"You're right."
The grandmother looked toward the pool.
"I've been swimming for most of my life."
The crowd grew quiet.
A reporter approached her.
"Why did you decide to compete at 82?"
The grandmother looked around the arena.
"Because I never wanted to wonder what would have happened if I had stayed home."
The audience applauded.
The reporter smiled.
"Did you ever doubt yourself?"
The grandmother shook her head.
"Age can change your pace."
"But it doesn't have to change your courage."
The crowd erupted again.
Then the official announced the final result.
The 82-year-old grandmother had set a new national age-group record.
The young swimmers who had mocked her earlier were now the first to applaud.
Some asked for photographs.
Others congratulated her.
The grandmother simply smiled and picked up her old canvas swim bag.
Before she left the pool deck, a young girl from the front row approached her.
"Can I swim when I'm your age?"
The grandmother knelt beside her and smiled.
"Of course."
"Just keep showing up."
The little girl nodded.
The grandmother walked toward the tunnel as the entire arena continued applauding.
Earlier that morning...
Everyone had seen an 82-year-old woman and assumed they already knew what she could do.
