The room fell into absolute silence.
Julián looked around, expecting someone to laugh.
No one did.
Ernesto calmly reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket and pulled out his phone.
He pressed a single button.
The front door opened.
Two detectives and two uniformed police officers walked into the dining room, followed by a female investigator carrying an evidence kit.
The cheerful atmosphere disappeared instantly.
The mariachi band quietly stepped aside.
No one spoke.
The lead detective approached Ernesto with a respectful nod.
Detective: "Mr. Salgado."
Ernesto returned the nod before looking at Julián.
Ernesto: "I asked them to wait outside."
Julián forced a laugh.
Julián: "You've got to be kidding me."
Ernesto never raised his voice.
Ernesto: "No."
He turned to the officers.
Ernesto: "He has already admitted, in front of multiple witnesses, that he struck my daughter."
The investigator immediately began documenting the bruise on Valeria's face.
Then she noticed faint marks around Valeria's wrists.
Gently, she asked if there were more injuries.
Valeria hesitated.
Then, with trembling hands, she slowly rolled up the sleeve of her emerald dress.
The room gasped.
Dark bruises covered her arm.
Some were fresh.
Others had clearly been there for weeks.
A woman near the back of the room quietly began to cry.
The detective looked at Julián.
Detective: "Sir, please place your hands where I can see them."
Julián's confidence vanished.
Julián: "This is a family matter."
Ernesto answered before anyone else could.
Ernesto: "No."
He looked directly into Julián's eyes.
Ernesto: "Domestic violence is a crime."
The officers stepped forward.
As handcuffs clicked around Julián's wrists, he turned desperately toward his mother.
Julián: "Mom... say something!"
Ofelia rushed forward.
