CHAPTER 2

Ernesto: "Silence protects abusers."

No one argued.

No one defended them.

Several guests quietly admitted they had seen warning signs for months but had convinced themselves it wasn't their place to interfere.

Now they wished they had spoken sooner.

As the officers escorted Julián toward the front door, the birthday cake remained untouched.

Its candles had long since burned out.

The detective turned to Valeria.

Detective: "You're safe now."

For the first time in nearly a year...

She believed those words.

Tears streamed down her face as Ernesto gently wrapped his arms around his daughter.

Neither of them spoke.

They didn't need to.

Some birthdays celebrate another year of life.

This one marked the beginning of a new one.

As the police vehicles pulled away, the guests stood in complete silence, realizing they had not witnessed a family scandal.

They had witnessed a father refuse to let fear win.

And they had witnessed a daughter take her first step toward freedom.

The End.
