PART 2 — SHE REFUSED TO WALK AWAY

The next few moments felt different.

The young athlete expected the woman to laugh it off.

Maybe walk away.

Maybe explain that she had only been watching.

Instead, the seventy-year-old woman slowly began walking toward the course.

One step at a time.

Her worn sneakers made quiet sounds against the rubber flooring.

The young athletes watched her approach.

At first, they were still smiling.

Then they began to realize something.

She wasn't confused.

She wasn't lost.

She knew exactly where she was going.

A male spectator standing behind the safety barrier leaned forward.

He looked at the woman's thin frame and shook his head.

Then he laughed.

“She can barely keep up!”

The remark drew another round of laughter from several people nearby.

But the elderly woman continued walking.

Her shoulders remained slightly stooped.

Her movements remained slow.

Nothing about her suddenly changed.

There was no dramatic transformation.

No hidden muscular body.

No youthful appearance.

She still looked seventy years old.

And that was precisely what made the moment so strange.

She wasn't pretending to be someone else.

She was simply refusing to let other people's expectations decide what she could do.

The young athlete watched her approach.

For the first time, the confident smile on his face began to fade.

The woman stopped several feet from the angled concrete wall.

She looked at it.

Then she looked at the young athlete.

There was no anger in her face.

Only quiet determination.

The young athlete waited for an explanation.

None came.

The elderly woman finally spoke.

“Why not?”

The words were quiet.

Almost too quiet for the surrounding noise.

But everyone heard them.

The laughter stopped.

The young athlete stared at her.

The spectators behind the barrier became still.

Even the background athletes who had been laughing moments earlier stopped smiling.

The woman turned back toward the wall.

She studied its angle.

The same wall the young athlete had just used.

The same wall everyone had assumed belonged to people decades younger than her.

For a moment, the woman's eyes seemed distant.

As though the concrete wall in front of her had brought back a memory from another time.

She remembered being young.

She remembered training before sunrise.

She remembered the feeling of stepping onto a course while everyone around her believed they knew her limits.

But life had changed.

Decades passed.

Jobs.

Family.

Responsibilities.

Time had taken her farther and farther away from the world she once knew.

Yet somewhere beneath the years, that old part of her had never completely disappeared.

She hadn't come to Las Vegas to prove that she was young.

She hadn't come to make the crowd admire her.

She had come because there was something she had never finished.

Something she had once promised herself she would return to.

And now, standing in front of that wall at seventy years old, she finally had the chance.

The young athlete looked at her differently now.

Not with admiration.

Not yet.

But with uncertainty.

The woman slowly walked toward the designated starting area.

The spectators leaned closer.

May you like

Nobody laughed anymore.

Everyone wanted to know what the seventy-year-old woman was about to do.
