PART 2 — THE FIRST BEAT

Margaret's right stick dropped.

CRACK.

The sound echoed through the theater.

Her left stick followed.

CRACK.

Then both hands moved.

BOOM — CRACK — BOOM — CRACK.

The audience immediately fell silent.

Margaret wasn't fumbling.

She wasn't struggling.

She was playing.

Her hands moved with remarkable precision.

Her wrists remained loose.

Her timing was exact.

The female judge's amused expression disappeared.

Margaret added the hi-hat.

TSS-TSS-TSS-TSS.

Then the snare.

CRACK.

Then the bass drum.

BOOM.

The rhythm suddenly became faster.

Margaret's silver hair remained perfectly still as her hands moved rapidly around the kit.

The audience began reacting.

A few spectators stood up.

The host stared at the stage in disbelief.

Margaret moved from the snare to the toms.

BOOM — BOOM — CRACK — BOOM.

She transitioned seamlessly into a fast rhythmic pattern.

The judges exchanged stunned looks.

The same judge who had joked that the drums would "play her" was now leaning forward with both hands on the table.

Margaret continued.

Her left hand maintained the rhythm while her right hand moved across the cymbals.

CRASH.

The sound filled the entire theater.

The crowd erupted.

Margaret didn't stop.

She accelerated.

Her sticks became a blur.

The massive drum kit seemed to come alive beneath her hands.

The host took a step backward, staring.

The audience was now completely captivated.

Margaret finished the sequence with a powerful cymbal strike.

CRASH!

Silence.

She held both sticks in the air.

Then slowly lowered them.

The crowd exploded into applause.

The female judge stared at her.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

She looked down at the drum kit.

Then slowly raised both sticks again.

The audience immediately realized another sequence was coming.

The music shifted.

Margaret tightened her grip.

Her eyes narrowed.

May you like

She prepared for the final section.

And this time, she was about to show them everything.
